Thiamin is also known as vitamin B1 as it was the first of the vitamin B’s to be discovered. Thiamin plays an important role in converting glucose into energy, maintain the nervous system and normalise appetite and digestion. Deficiencies in thiamin can be detrimental to mental health, digestion and general metabolism. Thiamin is so important that in Australia, it is mandatory for manufacturers to fortify breads with thiamin to ensure adequate B1 intake.  

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Nervous system

Riboflavin is an important component required in energy production, cellular function, growth & development and maintenance of the nervous system. 

If one does not consume enough riboflavin, it can lead to developing endocrine abnormalities, degradation of the nervous system and liver, reproductive problems, skin disorders and hair loss. 

Niacin (Vitamin B3) Glowing skin

Niacin is essential for the body to convert carbohydrates, fat and alcohol into energy, skin health, maintaining metabolic pathways and the production of DNA.

As niacin is an important component in DNA production, it is essential during pregnancy, where recent research has demonstrated niacin is important in reducing risk of miscarriage and birth defects. Low levels of niacin in the body can result in aggressive behaviour, dementia, insomnia, dermatitis and a general weakness. 

Folic acid (Vitamin B9) Essential for pregnancy

Folate or vitamin B9 is required for red blood cell production, DNA synthesis and for the growth and repair of all body cells. It is essential during the early stages of pregnancy, where there is rapid growth, an increased blood supply and the development of the foetal spinal cord.

Folate not only plays an important role in women, but also in children, as without it in the diet, one becomes fatigued, develops mouth sores, regularly suffers headaches and are irritable. Folate is an essential vitamin for fertility, in addition to reducing the risk of a range of birth defects in the early stages of pregnancy. 

Vitamin B12 Excellent for vegans

Vitamin B12 or cobalamin, plays a role maintaining the protective myelin sheath that surrounds nerve cells, and therefore plays an important role in maintaining mental ability. It also is important in red blood cell formation and the breaking down of carbohydrates, fat and protein to produce energy.

Vitamin B12 is mainly found in food from animal sources and is poorly absorbed in those with gastrointestinal complications such as coeliac disease, chron’s, gastritis and immune system disorders, in addition to those who choose not to consume animal based foods, such as Vegans and Vegetarians. 

Vitamin (B6) Mood control 

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) works as a co-enzyme, helping in brain development and function, metabolism and most importantly in the production of hormones that control our mood.  As a result a low intake of vitamin B6 can lead to depression, nervousness, short term memory loss and difficulty in concentrating.

Iron

Iron is an essential mineral that can only be obtained from the diet. It plays the pivotal role in maintaining blood cells and giving them the ability to carry oxygen around the body.  A diet low in iron leaves one feeling very tired, lethargic and pale.  However iron is also important in producing energy and maintaining optimal immune function, keeping one free of infections.
